Mario H Bengtson is a professor in Instituto de Biologia, UNICAMP Department of Biochemistry and Tissue Biology. He received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Universidade de Sao Paulo under the mentorship of Dr. Mari Sogayar studying the retinoic acid effects on gene expression of glioma cells. He got his postdoctoral training at the Genomics Institute of Novartis Foundation and The Scripps Research Institute in San Diego, California in Dr. Claudio Joazeiro's lab, working on co-translation ubiquitination.

My lab is interested in understanding different aspects of the translational regulation of gene expression. We study this phenomenon under 2 different perspectives: quality control of protein synthesis and physiological regulation of gene expression. In the first aspect, we are interested in the basic mechanism of co-translational ubiquitination and degradation of proteins, and its relationship with human disease, such as neurodegeneration. In the second aspect, we want to understand how regulation of mRNA translation, which occurs during neuronal differentiation, systemically participates in this process and the molecular mechanisms involved.
