About this structure

DDX53 (CAGE) is a member of the DEAD-box family of proteins with putative RNA helicase activity. The family is defined by nine conserved motifs, involved in ATP hydrolysis and RNA binding, which are conserved throughout evolution (1). DEAD-box RNA-helicases play important roles in all processes where RNA is involved (2).

DDX53 is highly expressed in testis. The methylation status of the gene is altered in various tumors (3) where the protein ultimately activates cell motility (4). The full length protein consists of 631 amino acids. We determined the crystal structure of the 229-amino acid DEAD-box domain in complex with AMP.
