Research Assistant

We are seeking to appoint a Research Assistant for the Centre for Medicines Discovery (CMD). This post will be working under the guidance of the Principle Investigator and a postdoctoral scientist on all aspects of the research in the group.


As a Research Assistant, you will purify a variety of proteins involved in Parkinson’s disease, pursue crystallization projects, will test the quality of the proteins and crystals, and perform biophysical characterization (e.g. mass spec, ITC). After learning the core techniques, you will be expected to drive the optimization and development of research methods, and to help in tutoring new students and members of staff in your areas of expertise. You will carry out bench level experiments, be responsible for analysing data and reporting results, suggesting plans to move forward with the research.


It is essential that you hold a degree or equivalent cominbation of training and experience in molecular biology, biochemistry or chemistry. You will have previous experience in protein expression in bacterial and / or baculoviral or mammalian systems and experience in protein purification. Excellent communication skills, including the ability to write text that can be published, present date at conferences, and represent the research group at meetings. Experience of managing multiple tasks in a milestone oriented project with minimum supervision and be highly organised with a strong attention to detail. Familiarity with MD Office products such as word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and able to learn other software packages is essential as the job involves use of sophisticated equipment and extensive electronic documentation.

Salary: 
Grade 6: £29,176 - £34,804 per annum
