The Structural Genomics Consortium Melbourne (SGC-Melbourne) is led by Professor Megan J. Maher and is dedicated to advancing challenging therapeutic targets through the integration of structural biology, mechanistic enzymology and chemical biology.

Based at the Bio21 Molecular Science and Biotechnology Institute at the University of Melbourne, SGC-Melbourne develops open-access molecular tools, protein structures and mechanistic insight.

The laboratory has particular expertise in membrane proteins, mitochondrial proteins, metalloproteins and enzymes, combining protein production, structural biology, protein biophysics and ligand discovery.

Current research activities include:

  • Target enablement of challenging proteins, including membrane proteins, mitochondrial proteins and metalloproteins, through integrated protein production, structural biology, biophysics and ligand discovery.
  • Structural and mechanistic studies of proteins involved in mitochondrial biology, metal homeostasis, microbial pathogenesis and rare diseases, providing molecular insight into protein function and opportunities for chemical probe development.
  • Mechanistic enzymology and chemical biology, using structural, biophysical and biochemical approaches to define protein–ligand interactions and develop open-access molecular tools for underexplored therapeutic targets.
